Shou Sugi Ban is an ancient Japanese exterior siding technique that preserves wood and protects it from the elements by charring it with fire. I cut this piece of pine wood then char the wood with a propane torch by swaying the fire from side to side until the entire surface is black. Then I pick certain areas to let the flame rest longer and burn much deeper. This creates unique deep crevasses and crackle effects. This is a special piece to me and I gave it the title Tested because we're "tested" every day with challenges, some large and some small. Regardless of the severity, these challenges or "tests" burn us and even char us but when we successfully endure each test we develop a stronger protective exterior to guard us from our next "test".
